The Pentagon no longer has any one person guiding social media communications. The two recent departures in the social media department are not going to be replaced. Now that the platforms are setup and active, the assistant secretary of defense for public affairs, Douglas Wilson, decided to allow 100 employees he oversees to speak on behalf of the department on social media.
"It's important for people in press operations, community and public outreach and communications and planning to be able to know how to use and access Facebook, Twitter and the other social media tools, rather than just have a single unit or single person do nothing but social media," said Wilson in Wired.
This move gives an organization the ability to respond quickly because there are more people monitoring platforms, and also guarantees the always important authenticity in communications. One concern to keep in mind however, is that you will not be speaking with one voice. For companies where this is important, the decentralization model may not be one to follow.
